Frequently asked questions

If my Windows machine is crashed, how can I restore my backup to a new machine?

  • If you have backed up that Windows machine with our Windows System backup set in CloudBacko Pro or CloudBacko Lite, then you can easily restore your backup to another machine by following the steps here.

CloudBacko's Support Engineer requested me to provide my CloudBacko's logs. What should I provide to them?

  • Please follow the guides here to find all the logs and send to CloudBacko's Engineer for troubleshooting.

How can data security and my privacy be maintained on cloud storage?

  • All data are encrypted locally on your computer before being sent to the cloud storage over the Internet. By default, CloudBacko will encrypt your data with a 256-bit truly randomized encryption key to achieve maximum protection.
  • All the names of files and folders are also encrypted so that each name will be become a meaningless string of characters. No human being is able to know the contents of your backup.
  • Data stored on the public cloud storage such as Amazon S3, Google Cloud Storage, Microsoft Azure, and Rackspace are safeguarded by the strict access and security policies.

Can I just use my cloud storage account password as the encrypting key?

  • It is not recommended. To maintain the security of your backup data, we recommend you to use a unique encrypting key which is different from any of your login credentials.

What if my data is lost on cloud storage?

  • We strongly encourage you to configure CloudBacko to keep at least two backup copies, one in external USB drive, local drive or mapped network drive, and another on the cloud. Therefore, if your data are lost on the cloud, you still have another copy of backup.

How to check my backed up data on the cloud?

  • You can login to your cloud backup storage account to check the backup data. If you have used CloudBacko to backup data to such account, you should be able to find a folder called CloudBacko. However, as file and folder names are encrypted, you won't be able to know the meaning of each folder within it. And you can't read the contents of each file too.
  • If you need to browse the file and folder names, open your CloudBacko and click the Restore button where you are able to browse the file and folder names. Restore the particular file if you need to read its content.

Can I seed my initial large backup data to the cloud?

  • Amazon S3 offers service to load your seeding into their storage. You are able to use AWS Import/Export service to seed your initial backup data to Amazon S3 cloud storage. To seed your initial backup data to a portal hard drive for Amazon S3, please read this instruction in our Support Forum.

Why do I need to backup locally if cloud storage is better?

  • Local backup is primarily for quick restoration. Severe data loss disaster seldom happens. On the contrary, human error and hardware malfunction are the main reasons for the need of restore from the backup. Therefore, keeping a local backup allows you to restore much quickly than from the cloud.

What is a backup set? How many backup sets can I create with my CloudBacko?

  • A backup set defines the parameters, i.e. the source, destinations, schedules, encryption method, etc. for backing up a set of files and directories, virtual machines or databases. Each backup set has a specific type, e.g. File, VMware, Microsoft Exchange Server, etc. You are not able to back up an Exchange database and files in the same backup set. You must create a specific backup set for each.
  • Both CloudBacko Pro and CloudBacko Lite allow you to create unlimited backup sets.

Does data retention have a limit?

  • CloudBacko supports retention periods from 0 days to forever. You can create unlimited retention policies for each backup set, i.e. a backup profile. Thus, no matter how complicated your retention requirement is, CloudBacko is able to accommodate it.

Do you support backup of sparse files and hard links?

  • Yes, we detect sparse files and hard links and backup only the minimal data to reduce the size of backups. At the time of restore of such files, we also restore these attributes.

Will the timestamps of files be modified by CloudBacko after backup?

  • No. The timestamps will remain the same. CloudBacko will not alter them.

Can CloudBacko back up open/locked files?

  • Yes, CloudBacko can backup open files using Microsoft VSS snapshot technology. For example, you can continue sending and receiving e-mail using Outlook while backups are running.

Does CloudBacko support hot backup of Microsoft Exchange Server, Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle database, MySQL database, Lotus Domino, VMware and Hyper-V virtual machines?

  • Yes.

Can I backup data from a mapped network drive?

  • Of course. CloudBacko supports the backup of mapped drives provided that you have the privilege to those drives. CloudBacko supports both Windows and SMB shares mapped as drives. However, backup of NTFS encrypted files on mapped network drive will fail with Access Denied error.

Can I control the bandwidth being used by CloudBacko for backup?

  • Yes, you are able to set the maximum transfer rate usable by CloudBacko for a specific time period of a specific day of week or a range of days. You are also able to define different bandwidth controls for different backup sets.

Can I restore files that are deleted on my local machine?

  • Yes. Each backup has a unique timestamp and can be used to restore all the data which existed at the time of running a backup. Your future actions such as modification or deletion of files will not modify the earlier backups at all. Therefore, as long as the backup hasn't expired (depending on your configuration of the retention policy), you would be able to restore older versions of your files.

Is there any way to restore the backup data if I forgot my encrypting key after my CloudBacko software crashed?

  • Yes, if you have previously exported your CloudBacko' setting in Utilities -> Ex/Import Settings and saved that file safely by whatever method you see fit.

Can I use CloudBacko for bare metal disaster recovery?

  • Yes, if you have purchased Windows System backup with CloudBacko Pro or CloudBacko Lite. Simply create a Windows System backup set with CloudBacko Pro and it will back up the whole Windows system image which is ready for bare metal disaster recovery when needed.

Do I need to restore a full backup first and then restore the incremental/differential backups in order to restore to data at a point in time?

  • No, you don't. You just need to pick a point in time to restore, and then CloudBacko will automatically combine the full backup with all the incremental/differential data blocks for you. When completed, the restore data would be the time in point version you selected.

For restoring a database, do I need to manually mount the restored database into the application?

  • No, you don't. CloudBacko can help you restore the database back to the application if you select to restore the database to its original location.

Do I need to use a speical type of license if my computer is without Internet connection?

  • Yes, you need to purchase "Offline Mode" license for using CloudBacko on computer without Internet connection. The price of "Offline Mode" license is 5 times of regular "Online Mode" license to prevent abuse.

Is there a site license option that I can purchase?

  • No, we do not offer site license. You have to purchase the software for every machine (both physical and virtual) that you need to back up.

Is there a license option based on concurrent usage of software that I can purchase?

  • No, we do not offer concurrent usage license. You have to purchase the software for every machine (both physical and virtual) that you need to back up.

Can I upgrade from CloudBacko Lite to CloudBacko Pro?

  • No. If you are using CloudBacko Lite and want to upgrade to CloudBacko Pro, you need to purchase a new license for CloudBacko Pro.

How does CloudBacko compare with other business backup software or solution?

  • Mozy:
    • Mozy does not support live backup of MySQL, Oracle or Lotus Domino, VMware and Hyper-V virtual machines, whereas CloudBacko has built-in functionality for all of these applications, as well as Microsoft Exchange Server, Microsoft SQL Server.
    • Mozy provides inflexible data retention period of 30 days only. That means with Mozy, your data with versions more than 30 days ago are no longer available. With CloudBacko, you can choose to retain your data for any length of time.
    • Mozy does not offer any control over the location for your backup data, whereas with CloudBacko, you can enjoy much better geographical control offered by the cloud platforms that we support. For example, Amazon S3 offers 8 and Google Cloud Storage offers 3 different geographical locations for you to choose from.
  • CloudBerry:
    • CloudBerry does not support the backup of VMware and Hyper-V virtual machines, Oracle Database, Lotus Domino and MySQL Database, while CloudBacko Pro supports them all.
    • CloudBerry only supports Windows, while CloudBacko also supports Linux and Mac OS X in addition to Windows.
    • CloudBerry only allows you to select up to 5 network locations, whereas CloudBacko does not have this limitation. Thus, you are able to select as many network locations to back up as you need.
  • Zmanda:
    • CloudBacko provides you with total ownership and control over your cloud backup data by backing up to your own accounts on Amazon S3, Google Cloud Storage and other supported cloud storage providers, while Zmanda only backs up your data to their Amazon S3 account instead of yours.
    • With CloudBacko, there is no markup on the cloud storage fee as the cloud storage providers will directly charge you the fee. Whereas with Zmanda, the storage fee will be charged by Zmanda with a pricing model that is different from Amazon S3.
    • Other than Amazon S3, CloudBacko provides more cloud storage options for you to choose from than Zmanda.
